Worship By Heart

"exploring practices of paperless leadership"

October 8-10, 2026

Give thanks to the Lord and call upon God’s name;

make known the deeds of the Lord among the peoples.

Sing to the Lord, sing praises,

and tell of all God’s marvelous works. - Psalm 105:1-3

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart

(that is, the word of faith that we proclaim)” - Romans 10:8

This workshop will offer training in the companion arts of learning and telling scripture by heart, and leading paperless song.

Where does this come from?

In the original cultures of the Bible, and in many of the centuries since, the sacred stories of scripture were experienced by people, not as words read off a page, but as tales told in families, by elders, and by leaders of the faith community. Music was handed down, not through notes printed on a page, but as melodies taught by heart and caught by ear. Scripture and song as oral events are the way many in the world still experience these touchstones of the faith.

Today the Network of Biblical Storytellers Canada and Music that Makes Community are two groups that carry on the practices of paperless worship. NBSC explains: “Biblical Telling is the art and discipline of expressing with our body, intellect and spirit a Bible text learned by heart.” MMC’s mission is “to help people connect and learn through singing. We do that by developing and teaching a practice of embodied song leadership grounded in a theology of welcome and generosity.”

Who is this for?

Worship By Heart is a workshop for anyone who has a leadership role in a faith community: readers, choristers, pastors, and anyone else who wants to develop their skills of worship leadership. No previous experience necessary!

Schedule

We'll root ourselves in daily worship, hear and tell sacred stories, learn and share songs, and reflect on how these life-giving practices shape us and our communities. The work we share invites everyone's participation, as we grow in our capacity to lead and listen with creativity, courage, and love.    **Schedule subject to change

Linnea Good  is an award-winning "Musical Animator" - a composer, performer, worship leader, accredited biblical storyteller and Christian educator. Well known in the Canadian church, she has written music for hymn resources around the globe and recorded 11 CDs. She and drummer-spouse David Jonsson live in Summerland BC, where they strike an un-balance between Linnea's local and online music teaching, and their work for the wider Church. The most fun of those ministries is the worshipping community "Ukulele Church". She and David have been blessed to travel regularly to India where they have shared in music ministry, biblical storytelling and bridge-building with Christian leaders. Linnea heads the Network of Biblical Storytellers Canada.

Paul Vasile is a church musician, consultant, composer, and teacher who finds his greatest joy in collaborative and community-centered ministry. Committed to modeling expansive, imaginative, and hospitable experiences of music making wherever he goes, Paul's leadership builds trust, invites spaces of creativity, vulnerability, and play, and supports practices of reflection and holistic learning. Recognized as a multitalented musician and liturgist, he is helping to strengthen, energize, and liberate faith communities through the ways they worship and sing together.
